A Million Little Things debate: The blue envelope mystery
The point of the blue envelope structurally seems to be fairly simple: Finding a way to keep viewers on board and to create a mystery that only gets more complicated over time. It’s this show’s version of how Jack died on This Is Us, though we don’t think that this is a mystery that can stay present for anywhere near as long. After all, this is one that has specific relevance in the present.
If there’s been one prevailing critique of the show from many out there, it’s that it has paced some of its bigger reveals rather slowly. The writers haven’t been in any hurry to get to opening this envelope up, even though we think that this is only going to unlock other mysteries when it comes to both Jon’s past and Delilah’s future. It’s also the moment that could really get viewers talking, provided of course that it is worth all of the hype.
Is there something that suggests that the show may choose to make us wait until the finale for answers? Sure, since you can continue to build tension for the next several weeks. Yet, we’re not entirely sure that the writers can keep circling this mystery for that long without seriously irritating their audience. They may be better off just finally getting to the bottom of it over the next couple of episodes, giving viewers a sense of relief, and then ratcheting up the drama in some other ways as we near the finale. This show is going to have no shortage of drama or big moments just because there is so much that can be mined from these lives — think in terms of scandal or heartache. We’ve seen everything so far from million-dollar sickness to death to the darkest corners of various characters’ minds.
We certainly also think there is a reason to unveil a new mystery in the season finale — you can create a cliffhanger that sets the stage for next season. Based on recent ratings, it definitely feels as though there will be one.
