NCIS: Los Angeles, Madam Secretary ratings fall after Celebrity Big Brother

NCIS: Los Angeles

If there is one key takeaway that we’ve had from the past couple of weeks of television ratings, it is this: Celebrity Big Brother is not exactly the best lead-in for a number of other shows around it.

Last night, for example, a new episode of the CBS reality show drew a 1.0 in the 18-49 demographic, which was about even with how the show performed on Friday night. This led into NCIS: Los Angeles and Madam Secretarywhich drew some of their lower numbers of the season in a 0.8 and 0.6 rating. In terms of total viewers, last night’s NCIS: Los Angeles was the least-watched episode of the entire season so far.

So should you read into this that there is reason to worry about either one of these shows? We wouldn’t go so far as to say that in the slightest. More than anything else, we feel like these two shows do have the benefit still of being in-house CBS productions that have a large following all over the world. Also, there’s something to be said for looking at and analyzing their year-to-year performance, especially with NCIS: Los Angeles given that it’s really not all too far off from where it was at the end of this past season.

For now, feel confident about both NCIS: Los Angeles and Madam Secretary’s futures on the network. The larger question to wonder about is how they will fare when they return on February 17? Sometimes, it’s hard for shows to recover after some sort of super-lengthy hiatus.

As for other news worth noting…

Fox had some sky-high expectations for their production of Rent Live, mostly because this is one of the most popular musicals of the past several years and Grease Live proved to be a highly successful production in its own right. Yet, Rent only drew a 1.3 rating in the demo, which suggests to us that there were some people who were not altogether interested in this particular musical. It may just be a sign that most network TV audiences are not 100% interested in musicals with slightly darker subject matter; if you look at most of the super-successful ones, they’ve been a little bit lighter in tone and featured a lot of songs that viewers already are familiar with. We’d say that Seasons of Love is the only actual song from Rent the majority of mainstream viewers are familiar with.
