Instead, this could be one of the most-painful episodes of the entire series as the Royal Family has to watch some of their subjects suffer on the streets. When Albert leaves the Palace for Cambridge, Victoria faces the traumatic impact of a cholera epidemic on the streets of London.

While we are certainly intrigued by the story at the heart of this episode, we imagine that others may be equally curious about the scheduling here. Why air a new episode on Super Bowl Sunday? Well, it’s actually something that Victoria and PBS as a whole have been doing for some time.

By and large, we think that airing new episodes of a show on the Super Bowl is a bad move — this is one of the most competitive nights of the entire year and there are so many eyeballs glued to one specific thing. Yet, this is almost the perfect counter-programming — strange as it is to think about, there are some people out there who don’t actually watch the Big Game, and the sort of people looking for other programming are the sort of people who would watch Victoria. This proved to be successful back when Downton Abbey was on the air, and this is a tradition that has carried over now to the Jenna Coleman series.

While we’re sure that there are a number of people out there who are going to end up missing Victoria next week, that’s what DVR is for! Hopefully, everyone remembers to at least record it so that they can stay up to date for everything else that is going to be coming the rest of the season. It is still somewhat-unusual for Victoria to air early in PBS before the installments air in Great Britain, but we’re starting to get used to the format at this point. What other choice do we have?
