Is John Bell leaving Outlander after season 4 finale? Will Young Ian return?

Here’s what we know from the end of tonight’s episode: Ian is still with the Mohawk, and he made the decision that this will be his life. He chose to sacrifice his own life at Fraser’s Ridge for Roger’s, and soon after this was able to prove himself as being a worthy part of the tribe. He seemed to be at peace at the very end of the episode, so it remains to be seen precisely what his future is going to be there.
Yet, we also know from the Diana Gabaldon books that Ian’s time in this story is far from over, and unless the writers are planning some drastic change from the source material, you will see Bell’s character back at some point in the future.
Speaking via The Hollywood Reporter, here is what executive producer Maril Davis had to say on that subject — all but confirming that you will see Young Ian again:
“If you’ve read the books, you obviously know what happens, and I don’t want to ruin it for anyone else. But I’d be surprised if we didn’t see Young Ian down the line somewhere.”
Of course, we imagine that the larger challenge coming up for the writing team is this: How much story to focus on the character when he is so separate now from Jamie, Claire, and everyone else. He’s in a delicate spot in that he is so far away from most of the other notable names on the show and there are only twelve episodes in season 5. It’s easier to tell separate stories in a book, given that there’s so much room for you to work with. Television has more limitations.
With all of this in mind, we’re not sure precisely when we will see Young Ian again — nonetheless, we’re happy to know that he does still have a little more of a story to tell. Outlander season 5 will likely not premiere for a while, but this is one of many things to look forward to seeing.
