What’s happening with Atwater? As the promo below reveals, he will be pulled over by the police himself early on in the episode and find himself the victim of racial profiling as a result of that. This is something that he’s clearly aware of himself after seeing it on the streets and hearing about it for years — when you’re a Chicago cop, you know what other Chicago cops do. He obviously wants to make a difference, but when you’re just one man in a huge police department it’s hard to control the actions of just about every other cop around you. It’s almost impossible, in fact.

While we’re not sure that any major legal trouble will await Atwater himself in this particular instance, this experience could still change him and he’ll be facing some tough decisions in this episode as to what he wants to do in light of the insight. Everyone within Intelligence will likely know of his mistreatment, but this is a complicated situation — we’ve certainly come to know over time that almost everything within the Chicago policing world is. Characters have their own ax to grind and there are so many different priorities at play.

What we hope for, more than anything, is that Atwater finds some sort of justice for what happens to him, simply because it shouldn’t. It’s not just because he’s a part of the Chicago PD, either; nobody should be subject to excessive force or profiling by any cop in the city, regardless of who they are. This is going to be a powerful episode, and one that speaks to a real issue just like many other stories on Chicago PD do. In the midst of everything else going on in the world right now, it’s also important that a show like this still continue to shine a light on this problem. It’s not going away, just because it may not be at the center of the headlines every single day.
