Vikings season 5 finale promo: Be prepared for battle

Are you ready for the Vikings season 5 finale to arrive on History this Wednesday? We hope so, given that we’re gearing up for an incredible battle. Kattegat seems to be the setting once more, and we’ll see multiple parties come to a head in order to see if the city will have a new ruler.

Before even diving into the content of the sneak peek below, one of the things that has been so fascinating about these past nine episodes is giving you a different sort of perspective on Ivar as a leader. He’s been, for the better part of this season, a guy who has let his foot off of the gas a little bit. (Not that Vikings have cars or anything.) He’s gotten himself immersed in the talk of himself as a god and relished in his new role … but has he really been the same strategist that he was before? This episode will be a test of that, as well as the other forces who have all assembled on this field of battle.

Much of the second part of this season has been admittedly about rebuilding, and this installment is effectively the culmination of that. It’s going to be violent, difficult, and stuffed full of all sorts of trials and tribulations. It’s certainly one that could kill off an important character or two, and you almost have to go into the episode with that expectation. Maybe it won’t happen and you can breathe a sigh of relief, but it’s almost hard to imagine anything else.

The sadder part of this finale is knowing that, one the other side of it, you’re going to have to wait a long time to see whatever comes next in season 6. We will be the first to admit that we expected a much shorter break between the first half of season 5 and the second half. Given that they were filmed so far in advance, we though History would be eager to put more on the air. That didn’t happen. This time around, we’re adjusting that expectation and preparing to have to wait another nine or ten months to see what’s happening next. If that doesn’t happen, we’ll just consider it to be a pleasant surprise.

Of course, that hiatus could be even more painful if the series decides to end things off on a cliffhanger of some sort…
