God Friended Me season 2 renewal hopes: Why is it still in limbo?

God friended me

Should we continue to have hope for a God Friended Me season 2 renewal, even without early good news over at CBS?

Before answering that question, let’s take a look at why we’re even talking about this today in the first place. Yesterday, CBS announced some of their first renewals for the 2018-19 season, with Magnum PI, FBI, and The Neighborhood all officially getting another batch of episodes. This was a great news for these shows, but it leaves God Friended Me more out on an island. It premiered in the fall like all of these shows, and if you take away Magnum PI‘s post-AFC Championship airing, it’s actually averaged better numbers than it.

So why hasn’t it gotten the renewal love that these other shows have? There are a few different reasons for it.

1. Timeslot – CBS may have higher expectations for God Friended Me because of when it airs on Sundays at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time — most weeks, anyways. Its timeslot fluctuated all fall because of the NFL, and while it posted some great numbers here and there, the NFL overrun may have contributed to that. The network may want to see how the show fares in the spring, where football isn’t consistently around, before rendering a verdict. (We’ve already seen it perform all right without it.)

2. The franchise factor – If you look at Magnum PI, this is a show with a well-known main character and that may sell it well all over the world. Meanwhile, FBI hails from a famed showrunner in Dick Wolf, known for established hits. While God Friended Me does have super-producer Greg Berlanti involved, he isn’t promoted around the show like Dick Wolf is.

3. Limited inventory – This is what we mean in terms of The Neighborhood. With The Big Bang Theory ending, CBS just needs some stable comedies. This is one of the better ones that they’ve got and it has some familiar names in it. God Friended Me doesn’t have particularly big stars in its cast, so it cannot rely so much on that.

There’s one other thing that CBS may be weighing here in that it doesn’t have full ownership of the show (Warner Bros. TV is also involved) — then again, Magnum PI and FBI also have other studios involved.

In the end, we are still optimistic that a God Friended Me season 2 will happen — typically, shows on CBS don’t get renewed until a little later in the year, so think of yesterday’s announcement as an aberration more so than the norm.
