Supergirl season 4 photo: First look at Menagerie!

SupergirlComing up on Supergirl next month is the chance to meet another important character from the comic-book world. Her alter ego is Menagerie, and of course her name makes us automatically think of The Glass Menagerie. There’s a chance at least some of you were forced to read that in literature class.

So what do we actually know about this character within the heart of this show? Well, for starters, she’ll represent potentially the Manchester Black storyline coming back in a new way. In the comic books, this character is a member of Manchester’s crew, and we know that there are some other characters who are a part of said crew also coming on board the show later this season. What makes Manchester such an interesting character is that he doesn’t consider himself a villain. He’s doing what, in his mind, needs to be done. His belief system is just so extreme that his actions aren’t going to do anything other than lead to more violence — Supergirl knew that, and that’s why the story went the way that it did on the end of this past season.

Menagerie is being played on Supergirl by Major Crimes alum Jessica Meraz, and in the comics this character had control over alien life-forms that could shift / assemble to form a wide array of different weapons for her. They can also detach from her body and fight enemies independently. There are some superficial similarities here to Venom, but mostly when it comes to the relationship that she has to the source of her power. It’s possible that the show plays this differently, so we don’t want to be beholden to the idea that this is what we’re going to see over the course of her time on the show.

Moving into the immediate future with Supergirl, it feels pretty clear that the top priority is going to be just trying to handle the emotional aftermath of the big Alex reveal. It’s devastating in so many ways knowing that Alex Danvers no longer recognizes her sister as Supergirl. How is their relationship going to evolve? It’s a hard thing to figure out.
