Outlander season 4 episode 12 top actor: Another Richard Rankin showcase

Richard Rankin

It’s still hard to process that we are nearing the end of Outlander season 4 — to go along with that, we’re also near the end of our Outlander top actor series! There is only one more feature like this that we can bring to the table beyond this one!

For this specific feature, we’re highlighting a man in Richard Rankin who is certainly deserving of more love after the emotional, devastating performance on Sunday’s “Providence.”

We have to talk about things first and foremost in a physical sense, given that the commitment that he showed in this story was unparalleled from him this season. Think in terms of the way Roger carried himself, his eyes, and the wear and tear on his body — he didn’t look like remotely the same character from the start of the season. That Roger was comfortable on some level, professorial, and understand that he valued a certain degree of control. Much of his life was on his terms. Now, none of it is. This is a man desperate, fearful, and having to make life-or-death choices. The man he knew is gone and he has to establish the man he now is.

With Father Alexandre, you saw Roger reach a degree of understanding about that — even though this wasn’t his world, he could put his issues aside to try to help someone else get an understanding of their next move. He brought a new perspective, and he recognized a world so much bigger than just his own. That love of Brianna is still there, but there’s also something else. Roger is a little wilder, a little more impulsive, and he’s certainly not afraid to sacrifice himself potentially to help bring peace to someone in Alexandre who he barely knew.

Rankin sells this transformation from Roger brilliantly, as he’s developed this character, through all of his torment, into someone capable of attempting a daring escape from Shadow Lake, or allowing an element of mercy for the Father. He and Sophie Skelton have had a longer way to go with their characters this season than anyone else on the show and yet with commitment to both their dialogue and their presence, they’ve made this emotional journey both believable and compelling. Rankin has shown you so much of what he’s capable of as Roger, and because of all of this, it makes a possible reunion with Brianna all the more fascinating. It’s really just a matter of waiting now, whether it be in the season 4 finale or some other point down the road. We certainly have witnessed many a wonderful (and also many a heartbreaking) scene with the Roger character to date.
