Coming into this batch of episodes, it was easy to draw some assumptions, with one of the biggest ones being that more than likely, Cicada would end up being the Big Bad. Why think anything else about this particular situation? This is a guy who established himself as notoriously, deadly, and incapable of being stopped by normal means. This guy is still out there, but it does still feel like there are clear vulnerabilities with him. If Killer Frost can trap him and just inflict enough damage, it’s possible that he could be hauled over to the pipeline without a means of escaping.
With this in mind, why not raise the question about the Reverse-Flash, and a possible misdirect to go along with it? Isn’t there something worth discussing about this particular idea? Eobard is currently in the future timeline with Nora, one in which he is claiming to be her friend and mentor. He’s doing a tremendous job keeping up that ruse, but that should not disguise you from the fact that sooner or later, that ruse is probably going to come to a close. You just have to wonder how much damage he’ll cause by then.
The real threat of Eobard is mostly what we already know him to be capable of — in turn, it’s also his ability to manipulate. We don’t know the full extent of his endgame just yet and this is something that the writers may be saving intentionally for the end of the season.
While the producers have not commented on the idea just yet, there is an interesting case to be made for this in regards to Eobard — wrapping up Cicada around episode 18 or so, and then spend the remainder of the season moving between the future and the present to get a better sense of what is really going on. Eobard does everything for a reason, and he clearly wants to find a way to hurt Barry still. If you can end this season with a showdown between Barry and one of his greatest foes, it could set the stage well for the future — or, it could set the stage for the Reverse-Flash having a larger role in season 6. Just by bringing the character back, we’re seeing already that there are huge plans for him still. There’s an awareness that he is obviously to The Flash what Joker is to Batman, and no matter how long The Flash lasts, Eobard is more than likely going to continue as his greatest foe.
