Dynasty season 3 renewal odds: Is there a chance for more episodes?
If there was ever a show that exemplifies the changing perspectives on live+same-day television ratings in 2019, it’s this one. This is a show that is only averaging a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic — yet, it also has a full-season order for season 2. There are a number of reasons why The CW, at least in this case, has been willing to ignore some of its live+same-day performance in favor of some other metrics.
1. Ownership – The CW is a joint venture between Warner Bros. and CBS, and there aren’t as many successful CBS shows on the CW. Keeping Dynasty allows for there to be more of a balance between the two studios.
2. Streaming deals – Dynasty has a solid international distribution model, which means that it makes profits all over the world in addition to whatever it makes in America.
3. Brand recognition – The name Dynasty does still mean something, even if you’re not necessarily seeing it in the live numbers.
Here’s the thing — it would be easy to come on here and say that Dynasty is going to get canceled because its ratings are bad, but when you actually look at the numbers, there’s really not all that much for The CW to be upset about compared to season 1. It’s almost even year-to-year in the 18-49 demographic and it is down only 10% in total viewers — Dynasty is retaining more young viewers in the demo year-to-year than many of their biggest hits, including The Flash, Riverdale, and Supernatural. It may not have a lot of viewers, but it’s keeping the ones that it does have and it’s managed to do that in a terrible timeslot. What makes the season 2 ratings a little more impressive is that for season 1, Dynasty aired part of its season on Wednesdays — it moved to Fridays and didn’t really lose anyone.
When you look at the ratings for last year and some of the aforementioned reasons why the show was kept around, couldn’t those same reasons apply once more for a possible season 3? Also, remember this: Jane the Virgin, iZombie, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend are all ending. Meanwhile, the jury is still out on some other shows including All American, Charmed, Black Lightning, and Legends of Tomorrow. This is without even mentioning new midseason entry In the Dark. We think that most of those shows will be back (especially Legends), but there are no guarantees. With The CW recently adding another night of programming, they have a need for more shows.
Our current verdict
While we don’t feel altogether confident that there will be a Dynasty season 3, it’d be foolish to write the show off based on its current numbers and some external factors.
