We are back with another edition of ongoing Ratings Watch article series, and this time around, the focus is on How to Get Away with Murder. After all, we certainly know that this is a show many people want back on the air for another season after this one! It’s got strong performances, a number of interesting twists, and it’s a natural component in ABC’s Shondaland lineup.

Yet, this is the first season where we’re not 100% confident just yet that the Viola Davis series will be back for more episodes. It’s one of the lower-rated shows that the network has and with that, there are some serious conversations that need to be had in regards to the future.

At the moment, season 5 of How to Get Away with Murder is drawing a 0.7 rating on average in the 18-49 demographic. That’s down over 20% from season 4, and in general there have been ratings declines year-to-year for this show for much of its run. We think that this is something that could play into ABC’s decision as to what the future will hold. Its ratings, at least for now, are down slightly versus some other 10:00 p.m. Eastern series like The Rookie and A Million Little Things, which was recently moved to an earlier timeslot.

Despite the numbers, though, there are three reasons why we think we’re likely going to get at least one more season of the show.

1. The DVR / streaming following out here – It’s massive for this show, and we think that this will help to a certain extent … mostly because it’s on the bubble. If the ratings were even lower, it may not be that much of a factor.

2. Viola Davis – She’s one of the best performers in either TV or film. We don’t think ABC would cancel a show with her at the forefront of it.

3. The power of Shondaland – While Shonda Rhimes is not the showrunner on How to Get Away with Murder, we think that ABC is going to do everything that they can in order to keep shows that are attached to her in some capacity. After all, Rhimes is now developing shows over at Netflix and the opportunity for ABC to get new ones from her studio seems lost … at least for the time being.
