Why NCIS season 16 could end, comfortably, with a cliffhanger

NCIS

Is it possible that NCIS season 16 could conclude with some sort of big, super-dramatic cliffhanger? Let’s just say that the potential for them to come up with a great one and feel confident about it is high.

There’s a pretty significant risk factor sometimes when it comes to cliffhanger endings. For example, you don’t want to make someone so angry as a result of one that they don’t end up watching the show anymore. Or, you also don’t want to create a cliffhanger involving an actor who may not be under contract for the next season. If you’re unsure about someone’s future at the time in which you are writing the end for the season, you have to consider that as you go into the process.

Yet, entering the end of season 16, we imagine that there has to be at least a certain degree of comfort for the writing staff, and for a wide array of different reasons. For starters, the odds of there being a season 17 are incredibly high. You don’t want to write in a cliffhanger if you have serious doubts about your ability to resolve it. Yet, the ratings are good and this brings us to the next point: The contract situation for at least some cast members are pretty stable.

For everyone wondering, Mark Harmon is already under contract for next season, despite whatever rumors are out there about him leaving. The same goes for Wilmer Valderrama, who signed a new two-year pact this past summer alongside a production deal. Maria Bello, meanwhile, is under contract until the end of a possible season 18. Many other actors may also be under contract, but not all of this information is publicly available. What we’re getting at mostly here is that with the deals of several major players set, that does give the show a little bit of flexibility for the writers to do whatever they want.

In some ways, we think that getting a big cliffhanger, shocking as it may be, could actually be the best thing for the long-term future of the series. Keep that in mind as we get more into the home stretch of the season — we do still have many more episodes left before we have to start thinking seriously about the finale.
