While we had a big episode for Chi McBride and his character of Lou Grover last fall, a lot of the attention surrounding that one came via McBride as a writer. When the next new episode airs on February 1, you’re going to get a chance to see an extraordinary performance from him as an actor — maybe his best work since his character opened up last year about almost taking his own life. He’s connected to the case at the heart of this particular episode and CBS wants you to know that this is going to be a performance that shatters your heart. We have never made it a secret here at the site that we love McBride as an actor so we are especially stoked to see this episode.

For some of the base details surrounding this episode, we suggest checking out the Hawaii Five-0 season 9 episode 14 synopsis below:

“Ikiiki i ka lā o Keawalua” – While investigating Flippa’s friend’s murder, McGarrett and Grover uncover a deadly plan by an extremist group on the Island. Also, Grover has an emotional reaction to the case, on HAWAII FIVE-0, Friday, Feb. 1 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

(“Ikiiki i ka lā o Keawalua” is Hawaiian for “Depressed with the Heat of Kealwalua”)

There’s a reason why Grover is connected to this case — he’s had so much experience in law enforcement that it takes a lot for a case to mean something more to him since he’s seen it all at this point in his career. It is still important that we see these moments, since they do help to further establish a sense of realism with this show. We’re talking here about one with huge action sequences, shootouts, and probably as many criminals in Hawaii as there are people. There’s a sense of fun escapism that comes with this show, but you need these emotional moments to ground the story. That’s where these sort of installments come into play, and Lou Grover is really one of the best people possible in order to deliver these big, powerful moments. He feels things in a raw, gritty way that brings you into his world.
