Grantchester season 4 episode 3 preview: The first without James Norton
With next week’s new episode, you are going to be getting a good example of art imitating life. The producers of the show likely knew entering this installment that many viewers out there would be missing James Norton and his character of Sidney, and for good reason. He is one of the most-famous characters on the show and beyond that, Norton’s career has been on the rise for a while now. While the series will move forward with Tom Brittney’s Will as the new clergyman at the center of the story alongside Geordie, it’s going to take some time to manage this transition. That is what this episode coming up will be about. You’ll see characters struggle in some ways with the sudden change in their lives, even though we do think that eventually they will find a way to move forward.
Below, CarterMatt does have the official Grantchester season 4 episode 3 synopsis for you with some more news regarding what lies ahead:
Geordie’s feeling lost and the future seems like a pretty scary place – even more so, now that Cathy’s talked him into getting a new suit. Mr Hobbs, her boss at Swinnerton’s department store, is a dab hand with the tape measure – and knows all the latest fashions. It’s a bold new word, and never more so than when Geordie’s called to an apparent break in at a computer laboratory, full of vacuum tubes, punch tape and bright young things. When the head of the lab, Professor Simms, keels over and dies from mercury poisoning, Geordie suspects foul play – particularly when he finds that the Professor appears to have spent the night in the lab with someone other than his wife…
A book of Ancient Greek myths with a personalised message – plus a previous arrest for importuning – leads Geordie to believe Professor Simms may have been involved with another educated man. He seeks advice from Leonard, who is upbeat to find himself falling into the role of amateur detective.
As Geordie and Leonard start to discover the surprisingly messy love lives of the computer laboratory team, Cathy is brutally tricked, Will returns to Grantchester, and Mrs C makes a shocking discovery…
While we will almost certainly miss Norton on the series, we don’t want to forget about the fact that much of Grantchester is still based very much around the mystery of the week. We do think that so long as some of these mysteries stay strong, there is a fairly good chance that the show itself will maintain an active and enthused audience.
