Now that the Dreamer arc is officially underway on Supergirl season 4, it was only a matter of time until we saw Nia Nal in costume. Luckily, today The CW did us a favor and decided to release the costume in full!

If you look below, you can see Nicole Maines in full Dreamer regalia. The costume is meant to pay homage to its comic-book origins, while also bringing you something that is well-suited for the Arrowverse and the other costumes that are there. We think it’s a strong look and Nia will stand out from the field; yet, we do still wish that the Arrowverse will allow for some more bright colors. The Flash is really the only hero that really gets to go for it in a super-bold way; even with Supergirl herself, the color scheme is a little bit darker than in the comics.

You’re going to get a chance to see Nia wear the costume for the first time in February, though you’ll get a tease of it long before that. A big part of her storyline revolves around whether or not she is ready to embrace this part of her destiny. There’s going to be a resistance on her part to doing it for a while, which makes some sense if she does want to have something that more closely resembles a normal life. It’s just going to be hard for her to do that given some of her emerging powers.

The significance of Dreamer in Supergirl of course stems beyond just her powers and her role in the story; she represents the first transgender superhero in the Arrowverse and serves as an inspiration for a lot of viewers watching out there. Her journey effectively continues The CW’s initiative to offer stories that cater to a lot of different voices. What makes Nia such a perfect representative for this part of the LGBTQ community is that she constantly overcomes obstacles and the show does a great job making sure that this is just a part of who she is — you hear her story, but there are a number of other important things about her, as well. It helps to make her relatable to people beyond just members of the community.
