The Orville makes First Contact and a new crewmember joins the ship in the all-new “All The World Is Birthday Cake” episode of THE ORVILLE airing Thursday, Jan. 24 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (ORV-204) (TV-14 L, V)
In true The Orville fashion the show is keeping its cards fairly close to the vest here, but we do think that there’s still enough to latch onto here for us to be reasonably excited. This episode marks an opportunity for us to experience a different sort of character and hopefully a different sort of flavor than what we’ve seen on the show so far. The more that The Orville experiments at this point, the better off it could be — just remember that it’s still reeling in a lot of ways from the departure of Alara and it’s probably going to take some time for the series to start to adjust from that. Getting a good, interesting character in the mix could help with that.
Perhaps the most appealing part of this episode is rather simple: The title. After all, who doesn’t love birthday cake? That’s delicious! Of course, we’re excited to get the connection between the title and this episode, which is hopefully going to be ripe with some interesting twists.
What we’re still hoping for, though, more than anything is that the show’s audience continues to stay fairly steady. Would we understand if there was a backlash to Alara leaving? Sure, but at this point, The Orville needs almost every viewer that it possibly can in the event you want to get it back on the air for another season. We know that there are some things the show has going for it for a possible season 3 (including a tax credit), but we don’t want to get our hopes up until we get a chance to actually see more of the ratings for the remainder of this season.
