Suits spin-off starring Gina Torres now has an official name

For a while, it appeared as though the series was going to be named Suits: Second City or perhaps even just Second City. It was a clever play on the fact that the show would be set in Chicago, the second city to be featured within the Suits franchise. Also, The Second City is an extremely-popular improv comedy troupe best known for their work in Chicago. It’s probably potential confusion between the show and the comedy group that kept the spin-off from officially landing on this name.
With that in mind, we’re pleased to say that the Suits spin-off will officially now be called Pearson. It’s pretty to-the-point, given that Torres’ character Jessica Pearson is at the center of everything. She’s looking at the world of Chicago politics throughout the show, and we think there’s going to need to be some sort of especially-aggressive marketing campaign around her so that new viewers are going to understand what this is about. The name doesn’t exactly mean much to people who don’t already know the franchise and this is a great opportunity to build a new fanbase.
While it’s nice to know the name for the spin-off, there are still questions aplenty regarding both the premiere date and then also how many episodes it will be? Because of the state of production, we do think that it’s possible it will be out at some point in either the late spring or the summer. To us, it actually makes some sense to launch it and a possible Suits season 9 … but that’s of course assuming that there’s even going to be a season 9. Based on what we’ve heard, USA already has a decision made on the show’s future, and they’re just waiting for the right time to announce that one way or another. There are still six more episodes to come for this show in season 8, and they are premiering a little bit later this month.
For now, we’re excited to see what happens with the Jessica spin-off, and hopefully it will prove to match both the intelligence and the tone of the flagship show.
