Vikings season 5 episode 19 preview: Ubbe prepares for battle

What’s coming up when it comes to Vikings season 5 episode 19? This episode, first and foremost, is the penultimate one of the season. With us nearing the end of the season there are going to be higher stakes and because of that, we’re also going to have a pit in our stomach that terrible things are going to happen to some of these characters. Isn’t this the sort of thing that we’re meant to worry about at this point in the show’s run? More then that, season 5 has not shied away from killing off a lot of characters already (really this entire show will kill off anyone as we’ve already seen with Ragnar). Penultimate episodes have almost become the perfect time to kill off big characters, even more so than finales. Game of Thrones popularized this trend, but we do think that it existed before then.

Ubbe is forced into hand-to-hand combat. Floki reaches new depths and is met by a shocking sight. Bjorn sets off for Scandinavia with an old rival.

The Ubbe story here feels like a direct continuation from what we saw tonight with the three kings. One of them didn’t want to accept his offer to put down roots in England and with that in mind, we’re now in this particular spot where Ubbe and this king will fight. From a standpoint of getting an epic Viking battle, what’s not to like about this?

As for what else is coming, we are interested in seeing what happens with Bjorn and Gunnhild as the story progresses forward. Bjorn is someone who often gets what he wants and right now he’s riding high on the idea that he’s with the first woman he has ever truly loved and is now going to sail with Harald’s army and overthrow Ivar to take over the leadership of Kattegat. The major cog in his plan is Harald, who still wants Gunnhild and Kattegat for himself… we sense a backstabbing coming for Bjorn, especially with how much he’s been flaunting his relationship with Gunnhild in Harald’s face.

Yet, the character we remain the most curious about at the moment is Lagertha, mostly due to the fact that we’ve already seen her have such a tumultuous journey over the past few years. She’s now in a spot where she feels broken and like she’s almost at the end (a broken heart multiple times can do that to a person). It’s not the same version of her we’ve come to know and love for so many years. This certainly does raise the stakes a little bit — for us, we have a rather-hard time accepting that this is who Lagertha will be for the rest of the season. Our warrior cannot go out with a whimper – can she?

Given that we are so near the end of the season, one thing feels clear: The writers better hurry to get these characters wherever they want to go by the end of the finale. There’s only so much more time in order to push some of these stories forward!
