STAR season 4 renewal odds: Should we be confident about more episodes?

STAR season 3 episode 2

What are the current STAR season 4 renewal odds at Fox? We’re back with another edition of our ongoing Ratings Watch series and here, we’re planting the focus squarely on the Fox drama. This is a show that the network had high hopes from the get-go with it being a part of the extended Empire universe. Luckily, it is delivering.

Is STAR generating the same ratings that the aforementioned Taraji P. Henson series is? No, but we don’t necessarily think that Fox is crying itself to sleep over some of its ratings at the moment, either. To date, season 3 is averaging a 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic, making it one of the strongest drama series on the roster. It’s performing significantly better than the network’s entire Tuesday lineup, just as it is also outperforming The Resident and the current one-two punch of Gotham and The Orville. Other than 9-1-1 and Empire, STAR is performing better than any hour-long drama series that they have. (We’re not going to judge The Passage after just one episode.)

Ultimately, what we’re saying here is that if you love STAR, you can feel pretty good about its renewal chances. This show is only down 11% year to year, which is a pretty good retention rate for a drama in 2019. It also has DVR viewers and a really strong social following that helps it to trend worldwide almost every week that it’s on.

Is there any reason why the show wouldn’t be back? Other than temporary insanity, it’s hard to think of one. It’s still early enough in its run that contracts are not an issue at the moment and beyond that, the upcoming reduction of programming at the network (Fridays are going to be about wrestling starting this fall) isn’t going to have a huge impact on a show like this. It would if STAR was a bubble show. It’s not. Expect a renewal at some point a little bit later this year, with the episode count likely the same as season 3. We also wouldn’t be shocked if the series ends up actually ends up being on the air after Empire ends, mostly because the latter show is a little bit longer in its run at the moment.

Now, that we’ve hopefully squelched any concerns that you may have about the ratings, now the other part of the struggle is this: Having to wait until the spring in order to see the remaining episodes. There’s still a good ways to go!
