Outlander season 4 episode 11 ratings preview: A possibility for more gains

Before diving too far down this rabbit hole, let’s start off with the remainder that this past episode drew 1.16 million live viewers — the best total of the season. It’s impressive that they were able to do this but, beyond just that, it was even more impressive when you consider the fact that the show aired opposite the Golden Globes. It’s possible that this show didn’t offer up too much competition, and instead the thing that was holding the show back ratings-wise was NFL football for most of the season. (This past episode was the first time all season that the show didn’t have to worry about NFL competition — it’s probably not a coincidence that it was also the one with the highest ratings.)
Now, tonight Outlander doesn’t have to contend with NFL football (unless the later game runs into overtime) or some major awards show. Technically, we’re aware of the fact that there is a show airing tonight in the form of the Critics’ Choice Awards, but it doesn’t get the same attention or ratings of the Globes. There are a number of other programs airing, including Ray Donovan, the premiere of True Detective, and even Victoria over on PBS, but they all air a little bit later in the evening. They don’t run directly against the show.
(While we’re aware that many people choose to watch Outlander early, these ratings previews have long been catered to some of the more casual viewers, those who prefer to actually watch the show when it is on as opposed to on the app.)
Our prediction
Tonight’s Outlander episode will draw 1.19 million live viewers, setting a new season high. We just think that with it being the winter and there being less major competition tonight, the show is going to very much reap some of the rewards of that.
