Top Chef: Kentucky episode 7 preview: Lena Waithe stops by!

Top Chef: Kentucky episode 7 on Showtime this weekend is going to have an extra dose of star power — Lena Waithe is appearing!

It’s no real surprise to see a celebrity in the kitchen, given the fact that it’s been a Top Chef staple for quite some time now. The series has a number of notable famous fans, largely because foodie culture is at this point so widespread and there are so many people who love the creativity that gets to be expressed here.

As for what Waithe is going to be tasked with having the chefs do, the attached synopsis reveals that and then so much more for what is going to be a pretty challenging episode:

Lena Waithe surprises the chefs, by challenging them to make their best version of the trademark Kentucky dish, the Hot Brown. Then super-chef Nancy Silverton brings her internationally renowned friend, butcher Dario Cecchini to break down a whole cow for the chefs to utilize along with locally-sourced Kentucky ingredients.

The sneak peek below is almost entirely about the Hot Brown part of the challenge and this is one of the things that we love the most about this show. While we like to think that we’ve got a reasonably about of culinary aptitude, a Hot Brown is not something that we’ve ever had — heck, we’d never even heard of it before reading up on this episode. It seems to be something that could be suitable for many different times of the day, and it should also allow for a certain degree of creativity from the chefs. (With that being said, we do think there’s something to be said here for going a traditional route and creating one of the best traditional version of this dish — with the right technique, almost anything can be brought to another level, provided of course the ingredients make sense.)

While it’s not specified in either the synopsis or the sneak peek, the easy assumption to make here is that the Hot Brown is a part of the quickfire challenge for this week. Immunity is certainly important, given that one bad challenge can send someone home. We are admittedly surprised that there wasn’t one that was handed out last week, which led to Brother going back out of the competition almost immediately after fighting his way back in.
