Ultimately, we feel a lot of sympathy for much of the show’s cast and crew given how tumultuous the past year or so has been. There was talk about season 2 being the end, and then there was the last-minute renewal and the casting of Seann William Scott as Wesley Cole. There was then everything with Damon Wayans possibly leaving at the end of this current season. It’s hard to really talk too much about the show’s future without knowing if Wayans really could leave. While we have appreciated a lot of things about Scott’s character, it was hard to imagine the show leading into season 3 without Riggs. It’ll be even harder to imagine it without Riggs and Murtaugh.

The Wayans issue does cause there to be a cloud over the show’s future, but even more than that, there’s another issue that you have to think about here — the ratings. To date, Lethal Weapon season 3 is averaging a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic, down 30% versus season 2. While Fox did give it two extra episodes from its initial 13-episode run, that doesn’t guarantee another season. We do think that the show has a better chance of staying than The Gifted, which has struggled mightily in the ratings this season, it’s hard to feel confident about its future versus almost any other drama series right now. The Orville may be aided by both a season 3 tax credit and the network’s relationship with Seth MacFarlane. Meanwhile, The Resident, 9-1-1, Empire, and STAR all perform better in the ratings.

In the end, though, we wouldn’t draw any assumptions about the future of Lethal Weapon just based on how the show is performing right now. There are different variables that Fox may look at come April or May, including the performance of a show like Proven Innocent that hasn’t even premiered yet. The big cause for concern with many shows on Fox is with the network losing a night of programming this fall thanks to the WWE, they are going to have to make big cuts. It’s similar to what they did going into this season knowing that they had Thursday Night Football coming up on the schedule.
