This Is Us season 3 spoilers: More flash-forward speculation!

Why are so many Pearsons coming together in the flash-forwards on This Is Us? This is a question that many have wondered since the timeline was first introduced, and we have a feeling that it’s something that could be revisited in further regularity as time goes on.

What we know right now is rather clear: We’re jumping far enough in the future to where Tess is an adult, and where Beth seems to be once again very successful after losing her job this year. It seems as though Rebecca is still alive, but there’s a general sense of unease around characters going to see her. There also seems to be a sense of unease around Randall and Beth in general — add that to the current state of their marriage in the present and it definitely feels like there are some legitimate reasons to worry.

First and foremost, are we going to get some sort of resolution on the state of Randall and Beth’s marriage? It seems that way. Speaking via Entertainment Weekly, star Susan Kelechi Watson makes it clear that there is some sort of additional information coming there; to go along with that, she also describes the flash-forward sequence in the following terms:

I would describe it as a completion in a way. For fans definitely. That comes to my mind. But also for us as individual characters, I think there’s going to be something very complete that happens in that moment.

So what sort of “completion” are we talking about here? A lot of that could be defined based on how you view This Is Us as a whole. It’s obvious that this is a story about an entire family, but there are particular generations of it that take center stage. We would say, in particular, that Rebecca is the fulcrum character of the story. She’s the one who is there most prominently in all timelines and if the end of the series somehow concludes with the end of her life, this feeling would be even more clear and present. While we’ve certainly learned a good bit about Jack before he ever met Rebecca, a lot of this information is important in terms of connecting to the relationship that he had with her.
