In the video below, you can see actresses Fenella Woolgar (Sister Hilda) and Ella Bruccoleri (Sister Francis) discuss coming on board the BBC One drama this year as their characters, who have been brought over to Poplar seemingly by the new Mother Superior. We saw that storyline take center stage on the Christmas Special and now, the story will be about establishing the next phase of Nonnatus House and seeing what lies ahead for some of the characters moving forward. We are anticipating a really engaging batch of episodes this winter, and these two characters are going to find themselves at the center of most of the action.
The most important thing that these two characters need to be is more or less game for whatever could be coming up down the road — after all, there are many different surprises that they could be encountering over time. They may have an assumption of what Poplar is before actually seeing the place and the people, but that could be shaken up significantly when they actually arrive there and spend some time with some of the people.
In general, the structure of Call the Midwife as a series is not expected to change all that much for the new season. You are still going to see a story that is largely all about the nuns and midwives of Nonnatus House helping expecting mothers in hard times. There will be moments of joy and also moments of sorrow; one of the best things that the show does is find some unique ways to mix all of these different elements together. The producers make watching it an emotional experience, but also a relatable one. Even if it may be set more than five decades in the past, there are still lessons and things that can be applied towards the future.
