True Detective season 4: Show creator already has an idea
Speaking in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly about the new season, show creator Nic Pizzolatto confirmed that he has another idea in his head that could turn into a fourth season … but it also isn’t something that has to be rushed:
I dream of making a TV show where you have recurring characters and don’t have to reinvent the wheel every time. After one of these I always feel so depleted. But I have to say … I have an idea … It’s really, really wild. Where do you even go after this [season]? I just had a lead character who’s 35, 45 and 70 all at the same time and this mystery that has to reach false resolutions and keep going into the future without cheating the audience and all these complicated structural elements. But I have an idea that’s kind of crazy. I think it needs to percolate for a while. I was looking to do another series, maybe a movie, in the meantime, but yeah. I have an idea…”
So with that in mind, we imagine that it will be a couple of years, at least, until we get more True Detective after this one and that is certainly okay. Of course, there’s no guarantee that we will even get it then. We think that the real sticking point first and foremost will be the ratings — basically, seeing if there is a way for this show to move the series a little bit closer to what we had all the way back in the very first season. Season 2 was a creative and commercial misstep, but star Mahershala Ali is at the top of his career right now and we feel like that, coupled with the demand for more quality HBO programming, is going to help this season stand out when it premieres this month.
To us, the biggest issue with season 2 is that it came out too soon following the events of season 1 and beyond just that, it tried to tell too much story with too many characters in a reasonably-short period of time. You could’ve easily done a full season with a few different characters in the ensemble — and we could’ve done without a lot of Vince Vaughn’s character. We do think that he gets unfairly blamed at times for a character that wouldn’t have worked no matter who was playing him.
For now, enjoy season 3 — we’ll be back down the line to discuss whether or not a season 4 could actually work.
