It was only a matter of time before it happened and we’re pleased to say that it’s now finally happening: Daniel Dae Kim is coming on board The Good Doctor. We’ve been advocating for him to come on the show (he executive producers behind the scenes) for quite some time since he’s an actor that we’ve long been a fan of since we first saw him on Lost, so it’s certainly a thrill to know the news is official.
So who will the Lost and Hawaii Five-0 alum play? Think in terms of Dr. Jackson Han, a new Chief of Surgery and a man who will have some strong opinions about Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) being a key member of the hospital staff. Kim will recur starting in episode 15 and be a part of the show through the end of his season. We’ll see what his future is beyond that.
One of the reasons why we’ve been so excited about the prospect of getting Kim on The Good Doctor is because without him, there would be no The Good Doctor on the air. He is the person most responsible for bringing the show over from the Korean format and really working to get David Shore and others on board.
In a statement about his casting, here is what Kim had to say in a statement:
“As a fan of our show, I’m thrilled to be doing a guest arc with such a talented, kind and hard-working cast … [Executive producer] David [Shore] and I have been looking for the right opportunity, and we’ve found a character that’s both dynamic and surprising. It’s an added bonus for my character to be directed by our own Freddie Highmore, who’s proving to be as talented behind the camera as in front of it. It’s been a lot of fun already, and I’m excited for the episodes to air.”
We anticipate that Kim’s character will clash with a number of different people on the series, largely due to the fact that you don’t get to become Chief of Surgery without having some sort of ego and strong opinion about yourself and your skill set. He’ll offer up a new energy and hopefully create a little bit of tension near the end of the season. While there is no official The Good Doctor season 3 renewal at present over on ABC, at the moment it does feel like it’s extremely likely. As a matter of fact, we would argue that this appearance from Kim is one of the sort of things that could easily push the renewal odds over the top.
The Good Doctor will air its first episode of 2019 on Monday, January 14 on ABC.
