Suits season 9: Don’t anticipate a Meghan Markle cameo, despite rumors

The talk of a Markle return first surfaced via the Daily Star, who quoted an NBCUniversal source claiming that they were looking to bring Markle back for a brief appearance, and in turn make a hefty donation to charity:
“We could be done in half a day or less. No final figure has yet been arrived at but negotiations are likely to be opened in the very near future … I’ve heard sums ranging from two to six million being kicked around and that sounds a lot – but it would be one of the biggest marketing coups in TV history.”
Now, let’s clean up this mess a little bit. Filming is already done for season 8, which is returning to USA a little bit later this month. Meanwhile, the series has not been renewed just yet for a ninth season, and even if it does, it won’t film until this spring — presumably around the time that Markle would give birth to her first child with Prince Harry. It’s hard to imagine the logistics of this working, let alone the finances of it. Does Suits really have the money in the budget to donate millions of dollars to get Meghan on board for a cameo? There’s also the issue here of her saying that she is done with acting. She stayed on the show for seven seasons, even for a time after she started dating Harry. She’s already given the series so much more than she had to and there’s no real point in her returning.
Also, we should note that we’re not even sure a cameo from Markle as Rachel at this point would be some enormous ratings draw. The ratings for her final episodes of Suits weren’t suddenly higher than prior installments because she was engaged to Prince Harry. Maybe it attracted more international attention and YouTube views, but it didn’t actually translate to better ratings for USA.
The final verdict
Maybe the British tabloid was able to get someone on the record at USA’s parent company waxing poetic about the idea of Markle coming back to Suits, but it’s hard to imagine a situation where it actually happens. The only way we’d see it happening is if she came back for the series finale in some shape or form; she does seem to have a great relationship with the cast and it really comes down to if it is something that she would like to do.
