Sunday night’s new episode “The Deep Heart’s Core” managed to draw a season-high 1.16 million viewers, even in spite of it airing opposite the Golden Globes on Sunday. We anticipated that the Globes would take a chunk of the show’s viewership, largely because the last time Outlander was up against an awards show, it was the Emmys in fall 2017 and it did end up impacting the numbers to some degree.
So why didn’t it this time around? It’s possible that we over-estimated the power of awards-shows as competition and instead underestimated the power of the NFL. Sunday’s episode was the first time this season that Outlander did not air opposite a football game and the numbers just so happened to go up. It’s possible that there is a correlation there and, if nothing else, we do think that this spells good news for Sunday night’s upcoming episode. After all, this one is not airing opposite a major awards show or the NFL and it should have a larger opportunity to shine because of that. We also do think that the cliffhanger ending to this past episode (you can read our full review over here) is going to provide an opportunity for a ratings bump at the same time.
The year-to-year ratings
To date, Outlander season 4 is still down in the live numbers versus season 3 and that’s likely not going to change over the final episodes, pending some sort of dramatic shake-up. While we do think the series showing some positive growth in the live numbers the past several weeks is good, the fluctuations year to year are really hard to gauge just because of the wide array of venues in which Outlander viewers can check out the show. DVR viewing is an option, as is streaming via the app and On-Demand. We do think more viewers are watching this year either early or after the fact, so the year-to-year drop may not be as significant as it first seems.
Remember that Starz does keep track of all of their cumulative views — rest assured that if you are watching the show in any way through them or some other authorized partner in America, it does mean something to them. Live ratings are just one piece of the pie.
