We know that the news has been out there for a while about Jen being a big part of this episode (entitled “Common Ground”); with that, why not shift the focus slightly over to Eve for a moment? Kaitlyn Dever is back for this episode, which is nice to see mostly because her appearances have been so few and far between. She also gives Jen and Mike someone else to communicate with while she tries to adapt to some of what life in America has to offer. That includes everything from professional football (hence Mike wearing his not-licensed-but-very-similar Denver Broncos jersey) to also the newspaper. Jen is using that in order to figure out what words she wants to use more often on conversation — basically, she is trying to get better and improve her English at every chance that she can.

We have always wondered what the experience of a foreign exchange student is like given that you are traveling thousands of miles from your home and often are forced to live with complete strangers. Your language skills are often mediocre at best and you’re forced to basically adapt almost immediately. It can be an isolating experience.

Yet, with the Baxters we imagine that there will be a warm, welcoming spirit — even if the family may not have all that much in common with Jen, we do think that an effort will more than likely be made in order to get to know her better. It will probably be hard at first, and that could actually be a point of tension in the early going as Mike gets frustrated with how polite Jen is all the time. Yet, we have a feeling that we will get there, and part of the comedy for this episode could eventually come from just how funny and candid Jen is when she actually does start opening up and speaking her mind a little bit more.

Now, fingers crossed that the Tribune Media – Charter Spectrum standoff ends before this episode so that people from all affiliates can actually watch it. (You can read more about this episode by visiting the link here.)
