The Today Show using Al Roker, Dylan Dreyer, Craig Melvin and Sheinelle Jones as Megyn Kelly replacements

Today

The Today Show took their time to figure out precisely what they wanted to do with Megyn Kelly’s former timeslot but now, it seems like they’ve figured it out.

This morning, the NBC morning-show titan confirmed that longtime staple Al Roker will be joining meteorologist Dylan Dreyer plus journalists Craig Melvin and Sheinelle Jones as the new staples of the 9:00 a.m. Eastern hour, taking over a spot that was previously occupied by the controversial former Fox News host. It really shouldn’t be all that much of a surprise that we’re seeing familiar faces take over that spot, mostly because this has long been the strategy that’s worked for the best with the show over the years — when you bring someone like Kelly on board, there is a significant risk factor that goes along with it. You don’t know if viewers will respond to them or turn the other way entirely, and this is precisely the situation that the network found themselves in with Kelly.

Now that NBC has made this decision, the next order of business is figuring out how to brand this, promote it, and turn it into something that can have its own unique audience and family support. It has to be something that hits and stands out rather than just another component in the standard Today Show lineup. There needs to be a specific energy here and a camaraderie that builds up a little bit over time.

More than anything else, The today Show just needs a good stretch of time where there just isn’t controversy given that it seems to be an almost-annual event at this point. There were all the headlines way back when with Ann Curry, and then after that you had everything that went down leading into Lauer’s departure from the show. Then, following that there was another issue in Kelly’s departure. There have been so many different changes that Today just needs for some things to stay solid and steady for a little while. After all, that is really going to be the only path forward for this show for at least the immediate future.
