NCIS season 16: Should there be a continuous story arc in second half?

NCIS

NCIS season 16 is going to be returning to TV with new episodes on Tuesday, but for the sake of this article, let’s look ahead. What should the focus be as the story progresses in the new year?

Let’s kick things off with a reminder that, by and large, NCIS is a show about the story of the week. We get that, and we certainly aren’t going to be doing anything to deny that. Yet, we do also think that there is room for the writers to do a little bit more here and they often do, whether it be a recurring villain or some other story that just turns up here and there. In the first episode of the new year, we could be seeing something that fits the bill in the form of Mitch Pileggi as the new Secretary of Defense. This is a character who could theoretically make several appearances as an adversary-of-sorts to the NCIS. He’s going to quickly show himself to have strong opinions, and not all of them are going to be in line with what Gibbs or the rest of his team wants.

We certainly do think that there is room to explore a sort of administrative battle this season, given that NCIS does at times do well with this sort of thing. Gibbs doesn’t always play well with others. Yet, we do think that there is also a little bit of room for more of a good vs. evil sort of battle between the team and some sort of mastermind, whether it be a terrorist, someone with a vendetta against NCIS, or even an unpredictable foe who ends up taking out servicemen. We actually think that the show could benefit from doing some sort of long-form serial-killer mystery, mostly because it would shake things up for the story and allow us to see something a little bit different than we have in recent years.

We understand that NCIS cannot abandon its procedural nature all that much for something different … but we certainly do think that they could take at least a few more risks. After all, wouldn’t that be of great benefit to the story if they were to try out a few different things and bring in a memorable adversary? Maybe you could utilize both the Secretary of Defense and a serial killer for the best of both worlds.
