Supergirl season 5 renewal hopes: Our latest Ratings Report

Supergirl season 4 episode 3

Even though season 4 is still far from over, what are the chances of a Supergirl season 5? In this Ratings Report feature, we’re going to take a look at that very subject!

Let’s kick things off here with a reminder that, at least for now, there is no official word on a season 5. With that being said, though, there’s a big reason for optimism. We don’t even need to get into the ratings here. Instead, why not just start things off by reminding you of Crisis on Infinite Earths. This crossover event may very well be one of the most-important things that the entire Arrowverse has done. It’s been in the works for years, and we don’t think that you even announce it unless you are fairly confident that most of your important shows are coming back for more. After the events of Elseworlds, we think it’s pretty clear that, pending some sort of dramatic change over the next few months, that Supergirl, Arrow, and The Flash are all going to be coming back for more.

Now, let’s take a minute to look at the ratings. To date, season 4 is averaging a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic, one that is buoyed in part by the performance of Elseworlds (which aired as a part of its season). This average is down from what the show posted in season 3, but remember that A) we’re currently in a different timeslot than before and B) most shows are on the decline these days. Supergirl is still in the middle of the pack when it comes to ratings on The CW, and this network is concerned about some other measurements as they are its live+same-day numbers. They’re looking at how their shows fare in DVR measurements, how they do internationally, and also how they are performing in terms of views on the app.

Basically, Supergirl would be safe even if the ratings are worse. It is such an enormous property that it’s hard to really gauge how successful it is by the pure numbers themselves. While we don’t necessarily think it will go on forever, we do feel confident that it has a couple more years’ life in it, at the very least. Let’s just hope there is more great content every step of the way.
