God Friended Me season 1: What’s the show’s biggest challenge ahead?

God friended me

Coming up tomorrow night on CBS, you’re going to have a chance to see the return of God Friended Me season 1 on CBS. We definitely know that there are many different things to be excited about story-wise, whether it be getting more information on Falken to seeing the development of the Cara – Miles relationship. (Who’s rooting for something more there?)

Of course, beyond all of that, you do still have this other issue dangling over the show in whether or not it will be able to come back for another batch of episodes. This is where it could face one of its biggest challenges to date.

So far, one of the things that has benefited God Friended Me the most is that it’s been airing with the benefit of a fairly-substantial NFL lead-in for a good chunk of the fall. That’s why there are so many different fluctuations in its ratings. It’ll draw a 1.1 or a 1.0 in the demo some weeks and then a 0.8 or a 0.7 in others. There are clear benefits to not being subject to NFL delays anymore, but there are also some clear drawbacks with the biggest one being not having as many opportunities to take advantage of those numbers leading into 60 Minutes, which in turn leads into you.

So what should we expect from God Friended Me moving forward with the NFL lead-in close to gone? (There’s a chance depending on scheduling next week that something could happen there.) If the show can manage around a 0.8 or a 0.9 without the lead-in, we’ll feel fairly confident in its ability to come back for more. You really just have to hope that it did enough during the past few weeks to take advantage of the audience that was there — that way, they feel especially hooked on the show and are interested in sticking around for the remainder of the season. We definitely do think that the series created a compelling enough cliffhanger when it came to Falken and Pria at the end of the fall finale that viewers should still be interested.

In total, there are 20 episodes in God Friended Me season 1 — fingers crossed that we’ll find out something in terms of the show’s long-term future by around the time we get around to the spring. We don’t want this to be one of those renewal decisions that goes down to the wire. If that happens, we may not know come finale time if it’s the season or series-ender! As many veteran TV-watchers out there know, that can be a rather nail-biting situation.
