When it comes to the Ellen Pompeo drama, one thing feels fairly clear to us at the moment: If the ratings remain what they are now, ABC would keep this show on forever if they could. There are very few generational hits left on network television, and by this we mean shows that only come around once in a generation, while also appealing to viewers aged 80, 18, or anywhere in between. Grey’s Anatomy has that universal appeal, and since it started off before the age of Netflix and rampant DVR viewing, it still has a lot of viewers willing to watch it in the same way they always have: Live. We consider it, NCIS, and Law & Order: SVU in particular shows that define this era, with a couple of other shows like Blue Bloods and Hawaii Five-0 also in here, to a certain extent.

Ratings-wise, season 15 is averaging at the moment a 1.7 in the 18-49 demographic, which is enough to make it ABC’s top-rated drama and one of the strongest ones on network TV. It is down about 13% year-to-year, but it’s still so great a number that ABC doesn’t probably care all that much. Given that Pompeo already has a contract for next season, we don’t anticipate there being a tough negotiation later this season — Grey’s Anatomy will be renewed and come season 16, the series can really assess itself and its future once more.

What’s its longevity at this point?

We really think that it’s whatever Pompeo wants it to be and we’re fine in the end with however long she wants to stay. After committing a decade and a half of her life to this series, she’s earned the right to really dictate her future on her terms. We don’t want to see the show go on without Meredith so if she ever decides to depart, we think it’ll be time for Grey’s to close up shop. For now, though, we don’t think that this is something to think about this year. Maybe at this time in 2020, we’ll have a more extensive debate about whether or not the series will continue (if its future is not announced by then).
