NCIS season 17 renewal odds: The state of the show (Ratings Report)

NCIS

As we kick off the new year we like to view a number of different shows from the vantage point of ratings — it’s a chance to actually examine renewal odds before it’s too late for fans to really do anything about fighting to save them! It feels like NCIS is a great starting-off point for that, mostly because we’re talking about one of the most-watched shows that is out there.

So why even bother discussing NCIS, a show that is so obviously going to be renewed for another season? A lot of it really stems from the sea of misinformation that tends to be out there about the Mark Harmon series given that there is a surprisingly-large contingent of people who seem to be happy making you below that right is left and up is down when it comes to the show’s future. There are constant rumors about people leaving / the show getting canceled that seem to mostly be started by people desperate to get traffic on their website.

The reality is this: NCIS is not going anywhere moving into the rest of the season. There’s been no talk of a cancellation and Harmon is under contract until season 17. The same could be true for other cast members, though contract information does not always make it out to the public.

In terms of the ratings…

There’s actually a lot for CBS to be happy about right now and we’re not sure we’ve done it justice so far this season. For any network in the 2018-19 season, they’ll be thrilled to just retain 85% of their audience year-to-year. We’re in an era now where streaming services are taking over and it’s tough for networks to convince viewers to still watch in the traditional way.

Yet, NCIS is figuring that out. They are averaging a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and over 12 million viewers, which are drops of less than 8% from the season 15 average. That’s fantastic retention for this show. Obviously you’d dream for it to be lower, but through the lens of reality there’s a lot to celebrate here as a whole. There were a few seasons where NCIS was losing a lot of viewers following some notable departures and the advent of streaming services, but it seems as though it’s started to figure itself out.

So when can we expect a renewal?

Think in terms of March or April. CBS often renews their shows at once, or at least the ones that are not on the bubble. There’s no real point of waiting if they know that they are keeping NCIS around for a while.
