Should Doctor Who season 12 start with a New Year’s special?

Doctor Who

Following the big Doctor Who New Year’s special tonight, should this be replicated in 2020? Why not think about it it now?

At the moment, the one thing that is abundantly clear is that there will be new episodes coming in 2020 and not before — that was confirmed by the BBC following the end of the season 11 finale next month. Jodie Whittaker is going to be returning as The Doctor and with that, the same can be said for Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill, and Tosin Cole. The series is keeping the same sort of ensemble feel that it had for season 11 and hopefully, they’re going to relish the opportunity to tell stories that are bigger and bolder than what we had this time.

Yet, the future for the next special remains unclear and there are at least two different options that the network has — they could return to doing Christmas Specials and ensure that there is something to watch a little bit sooner, or they could opt to not air an episode at all in 2019 following “Resolution” today. We do think that there’d be a case for airing the next episode on January 1, 2020, and then airing all subsequent episodes on Sundays following that. It’d give the series a consistent run and establish some sort of new tradition.

What matters most here?

Well, it’s really just that there is another batch of Doctor Who episodes coming in general. We think that for the vast majority of people out there, the fact that we’re getting new episodes really matters more than whenever the next one will air.

Also, what matters more than when the show comes back is what sort of work goes into making the next batch of episodes a success. We don’t think that it really benefits Doctor Who all that much as a series if the new episodes are rushed in some way and we think that they know that. The challenge for them is to listen to feedback and find a way to make the new season something that does feel celebratory and new while also paying homage to the journey that effectively brought them here in the first place.

Odds are, you best be prepared to wait a while for some more news — we don’t envision the BBC being in all that much of a hurry to share more news on the future of the franchise. Why would they?
