New Year’s Rockin’ Eve 2019: Christina Aguilera performs ‘Fighter,’ ‘Genie in a Bottle,’ more

New Year's Rockin Eve

Every year, New Year’s Rockin’ Eve has a featured performer as we get into the home stretch. This time around, it was Christina Aguilera! We certainly understand the thinking here — don’t you want to have a huge performer near the end of the show, someone known by many generations?

Well, Aguilera hit the stand in grand fashion right before “Imagine” and the famous ball drop. She had a tough challenge of performing in the rain and we know that this in itself isn’t the easiest thing to do. Yet, she still found a way to rock a huge production. Not only that, but she was clearly singing live throughout this despite the conditions.

One thing that surprised us from the start was her doing some really nostalgic songs — think along the lines of “Genie in a Bottle” and “Come On Over (All I Want Is You).” We also got “Can’t Hold Us Down” … or at least a little bit of it. This was basically a medley of all of Christina’s hits jammed into a really short period of time (we still love “Ain’t No Other Man”), and we definitely give her some credit for being able to pack all of this content in here. For one, didn’t have to be hard to remember what you were singing when you’re doing this many in a really short period of time.

We do think that because of some headlines over the years around this performance, we do think the stakes have been raised to a certain extent. Luckily, Aguilera delivered with something that was so great that we’re not sure how she could’ve done more with this performance. “Fighter,” for example, is just one of those iconic songs that you always want to hear, and she finished it in grand fashion while also being super-gracious to just about everyone in attendance.

Basically, we do think that the stakes are certainly raised for the next big performance on New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, whatever that is in 2020. It’s so crazy to think that we are almost to a new decade! We wish all of you the best as we get into 2019 and of course beyond.
