In just one day’s time, the Doctor Who – New Year’s Day special is coming to BBC One. What should you expect to see? Well, to put it bluntly, one of the most action-packed stories that you’ve had a chance to see since Jodie Whittaker took over.

In the promotional video below, Whittaker does her part alongside Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole, and Mandip Gill to tee up what lies ahead on this big special. The word “epic” is thrown around, and to go along with that we hear that there are car chases, high stakes, and something that could feel a lot like a thriller. The BBC have already confirmed that the Daleks, as classic of a Doctor Who villain as they come, will be appearing in some form during the special. This is going to feel both modern and also sentimental at the same exact time, which is a rather nice combination fore viewers who are hoping to see a wide array of different elements all mixed into a single thing.
If we were Doctor Who, the primary thing that we’d focus on entering this episode is just trying to deliver the most entertaining special possible and sort of look at this special as something separate from almost anything else so far this season. We know that season 11 was as a whole quite polarizing; we do think that there were some fantastic episodes like “Rosa,” but there was a chunk of episodes in the middle that were a little bit predictable and lacked some of the humor that we’ve come to expect from the show over time. What makes this show great is the mixture of adventure to drama to lighthearted comedy. We do need a little bit more of the latter, especially since Jodie was brilliant throughout season 11 and she would be able to deliver a lot of that.
Where can I watch the special?
If you are located in Great Britain, the special will begin airing at 7:00 p.m. on BBC One. Meanwhile, in the United States it will air on BBC America starting at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time. Check your local listings and broadcaster if you are in some other part of the world.
If you missed it…
We did write some good news yesterday regarding season 12 — while you are having to wait until 2020 in order to see it, at the same time it seems as though it will be here early in the year. Check out that piece over at this link.
