Luther season 5 touches on New Year’s Day, Alice Morgan in promo
There are a number of things that we’ve come to learn about one John Luther over the years, with one of the prevailing ones being simply this: He is a rather-haunted man. We’re speaking here about someone who has experienced a great deal of trauma and with that, has to figure out a proper way to emerge on the other side. Alice Morgan is a big part of that trauma, both in terms of highs and lows, sorrow and memories. She’s someone he cannot forget, and surprisingly, the lyrics to the classic New Year’s Eve song “Auld Lang Syne” fit rather perfectly to some of what is going on in John’s head. Clearly, Alice Morgan is an old acquaintance, someone who A) can never be forgotten and B) is certainly brought to mind from time to time.
While the BBC has been extremely stingy (and understandably so) when it comes to releasing actual footage of Ruth Wilson from this season, they’ve made a very deliberate choice in their promotional campaign for this season to signal that Alice is still very much alive (somehow), and could be turning up in due time. It’s hard to imagine them doing precisely what they are otherwise. They want you thinking about Alice and speculating on some level precisely what her role in the story could be moving forward.
Just remember this entering tomorrow’s premiere episode — if you want to make sure that you are completely up-to-date, you really do need to start watching from the moment the premiere airs. The BBC is airing four episodes across four consecutive nights and if you fall behind, it’s going to be hard to catch off. This is the network signaling that they want to get the year off to as great of a start as humanly possible, which is certainly something that we endorse given that there is potential for some rather-big ratings here. Idris Elba is as big of a star as he’s ever been, and we think that the return of an iconic character like Alice is precisely what the doctor ordered to make the show a success. (Speaking of a doctor, Luther is also airing the same day as a special New Year’s Day edition of Doctor Who — that has to be a nice way to further boost some of the numbers. Why not use one of these shows in order to boost the others around it? Just makes sense.)
