If you look below, you can see what feels basically like a Last Man Standing highlight reel as the show does its best to tee up some of the stories that are coming. It’s really less about promoting a single episode as it is giving you a sense as to some of the things that are coming. The big one that Fox is pushing is Jen having a larger presence in the new year, something that was set up a little bit earlier this season. The eleventh episode of the season “Common Ground” is likely to be more of a showcase for her than the tenth, which is going to be a multi-generational road trip where Mike Baxter tries to get along with Ryan while also spending some more time with Boyd. There’s going to be a lot going on with these characters for “Three for the Road,” which was actually supposed to air a little bit earlier on in the season.

We do certainly think that Last Man Standing is, moving forward, going to try to both mix it up while also staying true to its roots. This is a show that has an extremely loyal audience, one that knows what it likes but is also open to some new ideas and stories. The presence of Jen specifically is put in there to mix things up — with Eve only appearing on a recurring basis and with some of the Baxter kids getting older, it made sense for the show to try and reestablish having someone new living under Mike and Vanessa’s roof. Yet, the producers didn’t want to just Cousin Oliver the situation and try to just replicate what they’ve done before. Jen’s an opportunity to bring a cultural exchange into the show and for the Baxters to interact with someone who is extremely different from them. This could bring about some interesting stories and, beyond just that, offer up some new reasons for comedy. While we do think that there are some positive messages at the heart of this show, we don’t think anyone is going to lose sight on the fact that this is a comedy, either.
