Shameless season 9 episode 8 spoilers: Fiona’s downward spiral continues

Shameless season 8

Come Sunday, January 20 on Showtime, Shameless season 9 episode 8 is finally going to air. That means we’ll be diving into the back half of stories, and also preparing for whatever leads to the departure of Emmy Rossum as Fiona Gallagher. That’s a hard pill to swallow, especially when you think about some of the personal growth that this character was showing for a little while.

Think back to the start of this season — while Fiona clearly had her troubles, it did seem like she had the potential to be on the up-and-up. She was learning how to be a pioneer in the business world and she had what she felt was a steady relationship. Of course, that was before learning that Ford was anything but trustworthy and that her career was about to go completely down the toilet. Now, we’re going to be seeing a version of the character who is well on her way to rock bottom. She’s recovering from the accident at the end of last season, she’s spiraling, and she’s not going to be a help to anyone. That, in turn, is going to force some other characters to act differently since that one stable part of their lives is gone.

Of course, with some characters — including Frank — instability is just a part of the norm. The Shameless season 9 episode 8 synopsis below gives you a good sense of what’s coming:

Fiona’s downward spiral continues and Debbie steps in to pick up the slack at the Gallagher house. Carl and Kelly continue their relationship in secret despite her father’s strict expectations. Ingrid ropes Frank into fulfilling her lifelong dream. Tami shows Lip a different version of adulthood.

From a recent video, we already know that one of the things that Ingrid is going to be looking for is to start a family, and given Frank’s track record as a father, that could be problematic. There are going to be a number of interesting relationships across the final season — you’ll have some like Carl and Kelly that are in secret, and then you have some others that are a little more ambiguous. Debbie, for example, could explore more of her sexuality after trying to figure things out for herself in the first half of the season.

If you love Shameless, then odds are you will enjoy what’s coming up — even if we do remain a little bit anxious as to how the series works without Ian.
