Shameless season 9 spoilers: Emmy Rossum, cast on time jump, what’s next

Shameless season 8

Shameless season 9 is going to return on Showtime in just under a month with all-new episodes … so what’s going to happen?

First and foremost, what you need to know is that there’s going to be a time jump from where the show ended with the midseason finale. How big? Think in terms of six weeks. In a new video (which you can see over at the link here), Emmy Rossum notes that Fiona is in the process of healing following some of the injuries that she recently suffered.

Of course, not all of the injuries are physical. One of the biggest struggles for Fiona may be mental, as she has to find a way to recover from the devastation that she suffered in the most-recent batch of episodes. She thought she was moving forward and becoming somewhat of a business pioneer, but her money dried up and because of that, she finds herself back home and potentially spiraling.

So who is going to step up with Fiona down? Think along the lines of Debbie! That’s something that is set up in this video, as she’s going to take on more of a caring role around the house. She’ll do her part to help ensure that there is some stability within this family … or at least however much stability that there really can be when it comes to being a part of this family.

As for some other stories…

Well, it seems as though starting a family is going to be a focus for a number of different characters. For Frank, he’s going to be taking on some of this with Katey Sagal’s character, who is bipolar and may form a rather-unusual bond with Frank beyond what we’ve seen already. Meanwhile, Kev is looking into adoption and you will see some of that process play out.

As for Carl and Lip, both characters are going to be getting new love interests! There’s a lot to be intrigued about here, but these two are also so self-destructive that it’s hard to imagine that either of them is going to have an altogether-stable future.

In the end, this is going to be the same Shameless you’ve come to know and love for the past several seasons — at least for the next batch of episodes. The future of the show without Rossum (who is leaving at the end of this upcoming season) remains to be seen.
