Back when NBC and show producers first conceived America’s Got Talent: The Championswe have to imagine that Susan Boyle was at the top of their wishlist. The fact that they got on her on board is both a surprise and a blessing.

By far, the Scottish singing sensation is the biggest name to come out of the entire global Got Talent franchise, at least when you think about everything from record sales to the enormous impact that her first Britain’s Got Talent audition made. It may, to this day, be the most famous audition that has ever been featured on any singing show. It was emotional, and perhaps the biggest surprise is that she didn’t actually win her season.

Clearly, though, that doesn’t matter — and Boyle still sees herself as a star in her own way. Speaking in a new interview with USA Today leading up to the premiere on January 7, she had the following to say about her appeal:

“(I’m) a champion for those who don’t have the confidence to do things and don’t have a voice; the ones people tend to ignore … I feel like I’m a champion for them.”

Boyle also said that she wanted to do the show as a measure to prove herself — we do think that her record sales speak to her success, but we do get where she’s coming from in that there is no real downside to her coming back. She’s been away from the spotlight the past couple of years and this is a chance to make a big splash again, and this time in America doing some of what she loves. She’s also more accustomed to the spotlight and the fame than she was when she first burst on the scene. While the attention way back when had to be exciting, at the same time it was daunting since the entire world was watching her every performance leading up to the Britain’s Got Talent live shows.

Here, there’s less pressure — it’s really just about fun and her being able to go out on stage and deliver a performance that will be super-memorable. It’s probably impossible for her to top the buzz of her first audition, but she will do a rather wonderful job nonetheless.
