The Conners episode 10 spoilers: ‘Don’t Shoot the Piano Teacher’

Can you believe that The Conners episode 10 is going to be the penultimate episode of the season? It’s a crazy thing to think about, just because it feels like just yesterday the show premiered and the post-Roseanne era kicked off. Yet, we’re almost at the end of the road and the upcoming January 15 episode “Don’t Shoot the Piano Teacher” is going to move us further in that direction. It’s one that features everything from parenting to a baby shower, to (of course, given the title) piano lessons. None of this is going to go according to plan … not that this should surprise you.

When Ben offers Mark free piano lessons, Darlene finds this as an opportunity to test his parenting skills. Meanwhile, Jackie throws Becky a baby shower, and Emilio continues his efforts to be part of the baby’s life.

Originally, The Conners was only going to have ten episodes for its first season before ABC went back and decided to order another one. Does this mean that “Don’t Shoot the Piano Teacher” was originally meant to be the finale? Not so much.

The Conners will be airing some episodes out of order to ensure that the tenth episode filmed is actually the final one to air. The show’s January 8 return, episode #9 of the season, is actually the eleventh “bonus” episode that was added on to the order. Odds are, this was an episode added after the writers had already plotted out the season and they had to come up with an interesting standalone story that would not have any impact on the episodes that would air after the fact.

If eleven episodes feels like way too short of a season for a comedy, all signs point towards The Conners season 2 doing more, provided of course the show gets some added episodes. That’s something that we’ll hopefully get some news on very soon. As a matter of fact, we wrote a piece yesterday discussing the benefits of ABC issuing an early renewal before the finale airs — it’s a way to show a lot of confidence in a series that has had its fair share of naysayers from the jump.
