Early on in 2019, The Conners season 1 is going to come to a close on ABC. With that in mind, isn’t this the right time to look towards the future? We like to think so.
You may have heard, whether it be in the article here or in the video below (be sure to subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for more), it does already seem as though there are some discussions happening behind the scenes to get the show back on the air for more. That makes sense, given the fact that this was one of ABC’s top-rated comedies of the fall and it does still have a good bit of story left to tell — provided, of course, that everyone involved wants to keep telling them.
We also think that there is a reasonably good chance that said renewal is going to come, mostly due to the good PR that would come out of it. Let’s say that you are someone over at ABC at the moment — there’s a new programming head in charge in Karey Burke and with that, one of your top priorities is probably to show off a certain degree of stability. One of the best ways in which to do that is by ensuring that one of your biggest hits sticks around for another year. With talks already underway, there’s no reason to think that they would stall out.
In renewing the series before the finale airs, it’s a nice stamp of approval and then also a show of stability. It’s the sort of thing that is worthy of some celebration for everyone who worked on the show and it makes it clear to viewers that they have nothing to worry about. That’s probably especially important for a series like The Conners, largely because it is only doing 11 episodes this season and that means there’s going to be a super-long hiatus until a possible season 2 could premiere.
Even if the renewal doesn’t come early, there is still no cause for concern. This is a series that is going to be around for as long as some of the cast and ABC want it to — at least for now. We also understand that it’s possible, at least in theory, that the ratings could drop a little bit.
The Conners will return with new episodes on Tuesday, January 8. Fingers crossed that we’ll have a lot more news to share on the series before then.
