Madam Secretary season 5 episode 12 spoilers: The crisis of Waffles the Dog

Madam Secretary season 5 episode 12

We do know that Madam Secretary season 5 episode 12 will deliver an enormous crisis for Elizabeth McCord — most episodes of this show do, and this one will put her potentially at odds with China. As you would imagine, they are pretty high up on the list of people you really don’t want to be having some sort of dispute with.

Yet, at the same time this is not the story that really intrigues us the most entering this particular episode. We’re looking instead here at the battle between Matt and Daisy over Waffles the Dog. Yes, we understand that this is as small-scale as small-scale can be, but we kind of like sometimes when this show reminds us that the Secretary and some of her staffers are people and they collectively have some of the same fights as anyone else. That includes, of course, a battle over whether or not Matt is taking care of Waffles properly. As dog owners and dog lovers ourselves (Coco Vanderwoof is the CEO of CarterMatt after all), we love any stories that put dogs front and center.

Strategic Ambiguity” – Elizabeth must salvage a deal with a military contractor by supplying fighter jets to Taiwan, but she risks triggering a war with China in the process. Also, Daisy gets frustrated with Matt for failing to help take care of her dog like he promised, on MADAM SECRETARY, Sunday, Jan. 13 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

There’s a part of us that may also like to focus more on the comedic dog storyline here just because there’s something about it that personally feels more appealing. It’s a chance to have a memorable subplot! We imagine that there are hundreds of shows out there where a potential war between America and China would always get top billing, but here it feels like something that happens almost all the time with America and at least one other country. It’s a semi-regular occurrence. It’s not every day we get Waffles the dog!

By the time this episode rolls around on January 13, there’s a good chance that the “Family Separation” arc will be complete. Madam Secretary is not the sort of show that tends to let these sort of things linger — plus, there’s not really a whole lot of time Elizabeth can spend on diplomacy while working through a legal situation in Arizona.
