Vikings season 5 episode 16 preview: Ivar hatches a new plan
Over the course of this series, we’ve come to know that the wheels are always turning, even if there aren’t any major battles. This episode coming up will be one where numerous characters seek to pursue further glory or safety, though the way in which they do so could very much vary depending on circumstance.

Bjorn achieves one of Ragnar’s dreams; Ivar hatches a new plan in Kattegat, while preparing for a divine arrival; a settler in Iceland returns in a terrible state; King Alfred faces his greatest threat yet.
One of the most intriguing parts of Vikings to us is how the writers could continue to find a way to create stakes for a man like Ivar when history itself dictates that he lived a fairly long life. This is a man who, to mix mythologies, has become a little bit like Icarus as of late. He’s flying too close to the sun with his belief about his godhood and some of the trouble that he is creating for himself because of that. Somehow, Ivar will have to find a way to continue to hone the skills that got him where he is in Kattegat — his ability to out-think most of his opponents. He’s never going to be able to defeat anyone physically, so he has to continue to use his talents in some other ways.
As for what else should be fairly prominent within this episode, we feel like one of the #1 things to watch out for more than anything else is seeing how Lagertha is doing in the wake of Heahmund’s death. We don’t really think we need to go out of our way in stressing the importance here — this marks the character losing someone else extremely close to her and this is going to leave a rather-dramatic mark on the remainder of her life. She needs to figure out just how to cope with that not just emotionally, but also in terms of what it means for her place in the world. Heahmund had offered up some sort of solace amidst a world that was full of danger and characters who want her out of commission for good. Life is going to be that much harder now, and it certainly was rather-tough already.
