New Amsterdam episode 10 spoilers: Is everyone learning truth about Max?

Through most of New Amsterdam season 1 to date, what Dr. Max Goodwin has had on his side is secrecy. He’s had the ability to keep things quiet about his cancer diagnosis as he continues to make the hospital a better place. This is what he wants — he doesn’t need the spotlight on his condition and he tends to value the collective lives of hundreds of people at one time over his own … as skewed as that may be for the hospital’s long-term future.

In the aftermath of the fall finale earlier this month, it’s clear now that Max’s philosophy towards the hospital is untenable. He cannot continue to put himself in a situation where his life doesn’t matter as much. He collapsed out with Georgia and at the start of episode 10 on January 8, he’s going to be brought in. He will need immediate treatment and with that, Dr. Sharpe is going to finally open up about how she has been treating Max. They have a right to know given that he is the medical director; not only that, but they need to have all of the proper information in order to treat him.

For some more information, including some of the side stories within this episode, check out the New Amsterdam episode 10 synopsis that CarterMatt has for you below:

As Max (Ryan Eggold) fights for his life, New Amsterdam is in full swing with a pertinent heart surgery that is not covered by insurance and a potential nurses walk out. As the team feels Max’s absence and the doctors find out that they may have to treat one of their own, Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) must finally come clean about Max’s condition. Also starring Janet Montgomery as Dr. Lauren Bloom, Tyler Labine as Dr. Iggy Frome, Anupam Kher as Dr. Vijay Kapoor and Jocko Sims as Dr. Floyd Reynolds. Guest starring Ron Rifkin as Dean Fulton, Lisa O’Hare as Georgia Goodwin, Zabryna Guevara as Dora, Alejandro Hernandez as Casey, Sendhil Ramamurthy as Dr. Akash Panthaki, and Dierdre Friel as Ella.

The one name that sticks out in here is Ramamurthy’s, given that his character is running an experimental practice that may help to heal Max in a way few others could. That seems to be the direction that this series is heading and you have to hope that something works and works fast. It’s hard to imagine New Amsterdam working in the long-term with Max as a patient and not actually a doctor. We imagine that there will be an era of this show, if it lasts long enough, where his cancer is not constantly at the forefront. There just needs to be a realistic path to get us there.
