Outlander season 4 video: Producers discuss ‘Wilmington’ story

Outlander

Outlander season 4 episode 8 was, by all measures, one of the most important of the entire series. The majority of the major characters were in roughly the same place, but they haven’t all arrived at a point where they are interacting with one another just yet. Instead, there are still many individual struggles, with the biggest one of course being the horrific situation that unfolded with Brianna.

Why were certain decisions made in regards to it? In the video at the bottom of this article, executive producers Toni Graphia, Maril Davis, and Matthew B. Roberts note that they wanted to have the assault with Bree and Stephen Bonnet play out in real time rather than flashbacks, as it happens within the books. The reason for this was that they wanted you to experience the horror of what happened in the moment rather than hear about it down the line — it is even more unsettling in this way, especially with the contrast that it provides. Earlier in this same episode, Brianna has one of the happiest moments of her life with Roger; however, after this she has one of her absolutely worst.

The three producers note, meanwhile, that one of their most-difficult debates came on the subject of Roger leaving and how he opted to do so that night — after all, who would leave the woman they love in this sort of dangerous environment, even after a fight? That’s especially true given everything that Roger did in order to find her. It was the sort of thing that made Roger rather unlikable in the moment, though we suppose this is a part of the point in Outlander — these characters are meant to be real and with that, they make unpopular decisions that viewers are not intended to like. Our personal hope is that Roger’s departure was just out of losing his temper and that sooner rather than later, he will work to find her again. Time will tell.

On a more lighthearted note, this video does contain some fun insight as David, Graphia, and Roberts detail the theater scene and some of the research that they did in order to make all of this accurate. There was actually a good bit of information we learned from watching this! Who knew that Outlander behind-the-scenes videos could be so educational?

The next new episode of Outlander is going to air on Starz come Sunday night. Stay tuned for more insight!
